Not a paying gig, but I have a friend who is heavily involved with the opera scene around hampton roads, and more specifically, ODU. They had a small show in early November and wanted some pictures taken. A day or two before, Suzanne asked if I'd be interested in helping out with that. It was jsut to get my name out there and to maybe pick up some paying gigs later. See, ODU has a photographer, but the department doesnt own the rights to the photos when the university photographer takes them. So, I stepped in. Here are some of the photos I took.

She usually acts as though i've devised a machine that takes her soul, so everytime i turn on the camera or cell phone, she runs and then stalks me all night around corners. BUT! I was trying to get my bed made up and she was being all harley-like and laying where i needed to get fitted sheets down. i decided to be a mean mommy and take her picture to piss her off and get her off the bed. instead, she stayed. and i took pictures. win win for me! enjoy one below. i'll add more at a later date. i was being pretty shaky, so i got a few good ones, but nothing crazy spectacular.

A Post: A second look at Stevo in the Arboretum

Hello, lovelies. Sorry that I've gotten behind, I have had a ton of work and family. I have an update right now, and probably another tomorrow. Enjoy the second part of my trip with the boy.

During his mythical journey, the boy becomes one of the trees.

And further with his brethren he basks in the sun peeking through the canopy of leaves.

And he was so enthralled, that he could barely open his eyes. (ok, i just loved the picture, and it would have been better if he wasn't closing his eyes.)

The boy met all sorts of creatures and foliage, but none more interesting than this guy.

And he moved freely, mimicking the motion of the plant life.

And this tree has a hole in it. :D

A Post: A day with the boy at the arboretum (pt 1 of 2)

Well, beautifuls, the boy and I took an adventure the Sunday before last and went to the Chesapeake Arboretum. It was perfect, chilly (so no bugs) and the lighting really helped me get my first lesson in shadows, bright light and so fourth. I feel like the trip helped me grow a lot in photo blogging. Please enjoy!

I felt like these looked like something prehistoric. I know, the front one is out of focused, just assume that's how it's supposed to be, ok?

I could probably end up with a whole hard drive of pictures of plant life.

The iron and clay from bricks and other debris made this water so red. It seemed unnatural, yet beautifully juxtaposed with the green overhang.

They built a rail into the tree. I have a sweet picture of the actual rail, but I didn't use it.

I am a crafter. This is how you know. Those boxes are gone and this is all organized, though!

Apparently my apartment complex killed the hornets that were dwelling in this, but didn't think it necessary to remove it from a foot away from my porch. Naturally, I got close and snapped a picture.

I frothed the milk so stiff that the caramel just sat on top of my macchiato until i got half way through. Then i licked it off because I have no self control.

Well, loves, I was going to go around VA Beach and drop off cakepops, but i ended up getting lazy due to the rain that we've been dealing with all day. SO! You all get a few pictures that I promised last week. Here as some, and I will have to upload and mess around with some more. Please, enjoy!

This is part of our walk. I just really liked how chipper everything looked. Plus! I got some of the coloration on the tree trunk, which is one of my favorite naturally occurring color phenoms.

Bert and Stevo really are BFF, I just take the pictures and cook the food.

Jessica made this ADORABLE owl, who I believe she named Al. He's adorable, and now has a mustache!

Hello, all! I have some photos for you that are indicative of what I did this week. There will be more to follow, but I have cleaned my butt off today (seriously, cleaned out the car, washed down the patio furniture, vaccumed, put the rug down in the dining room, went through everything that was in the car, went through two boxes, moved a tv from the dining room to my bedroom, laundry, cleaned the kitchen, and then some) so, I am tired. Here are your gems for now. The weather is turning, so I'm sure I'll have way more to share soon!

Stevo, Bert and I went on a long walk when it was gorgeous out two weekends ago. This was the end of the walk. They're both rather handsome, no?

I made cupcakes. I forgot to take a picture of the final product. They were strawberry, with strawberry frosting and fresh strawberries on top. I delivered them to people so that I didn't over eat.

This was the lemon cake thing that Jessica had. It looks radioactive. We ate it anyway.

I kind of love this picture. It was part of our lunch Friday. The weather was amazing and cantaloupe was on sale. It was also way delicious.

I was dumb and brought my camera, but forgot to bring it inside with me to Mike's birthday festivities. Tristan will just have to make her awesome and beautiful cakepops again soon. Hello, all! I have a few pictures. Nothing too special (Though, I'd like to point out that every subject in these pictures IS MOST DEFINITELY SPECIAL (perhaps the doughnut less so)), but, forcing myself to put some up, and to chronicle my week, you end up with some weeks that aren't as fabulous as others. So it goes. Valentine's day was this past week. I've never been huge on it and the boy and I don't really do anything special on it because of it. But! We did have some fantastic doughnuts that were themed. Other than that, I forgot the camera at home when I took the rents out for some T West, and I spent the whole weekend house sitting, so I don't have any real gems for you. But, deal with it. :)

A post: A few googled images

Hello, my loves. I have a few pictures for you. I hope to have more of my personal photography soon, but I want to secure some photoshop ish in order to edit properly. That doesn't mean that you have to wait on that, I may forego the photoshop editing and post some pictures before I get it, but at this moment, you get to see some stuff that I i'm really digging right now.

First, I am in love with the idea of finding/creating some unique lighting for my apartment. It's been needed for a while now but I'm actually really particular with my lighting choices. Not saying that things like black floor lamps with glass bowls are bad, but I've really tried to dedicate myself to thinking things through more. Buying a lamp because it's cheap and i think it will give lighting doesn't help me out since I have enough lighting to get by and I'd be pretty annoyed with the purchase. So, I stumbled upon this lighting fixture on a blog. It's fantastic. I want to make stuff like this.

I also stumbled upon these awesome watches. There is one on ideeli for 80 bucks (opposed to the 135) but I'm trying to save up some money since I just bought my camera and a TV. But, honestly, how amazing is the idea of going more green (the idea, the practice, like most things, tends to be hazy)? Also, who doesn't love a more natural feel to their surroundings? The textures and colors and general design make these a win in my book.

So... I guess I will leave you with a final thing that I'm in love with right now. That would be the band Tennis and their album "Cape Dory." It's definitely not going to be the best album of the year. It does, however make me happy. The husband/wife duo don't try to accomplish more than they are capable and seem to channel a retro/beach boys vibe in a winter season that seems to be never-ending. I think you should check it out, especially the tracks "take me somewhere" and "marathon." To me, it feels like Best Cost if Best Coast didn't whine so much about needing a man. And I like Best Coast, except for the whining, so Tennis is a natural fit for me when I want to relax and sink into the sound of high tide.

I promise, my loves, more actual photojournaling coming soon. I am also working on changing up my apartment some, so that will help get things moving. Oh! I will also do better with my setup. I'm limited right now because I'm on my work machine. All my love!

A Post: A Format Change

Well, my lovelies. It appears as though I have not come back to this journal like I said I would. But! NOW! I have some things starting that I hope to continue with. One, crafting. I'm going to do it. Mainly sewing, crocheting, knitting and embroidery. If I don't suck, I will post pictures and products. Two, I also recently purchased my first non-point and shoot camera. It is a beloved canon from my good friend, Josiah (http://wewilltastetheislandsandthesea.blogspot.com/). I don't intend to be an amazing photographer, but I hope to get some beauty captured, edited and shared. And this here blog should get some of those things. I may also do more culturally relevant stories and such (nothing intense, just like my favorite album of the moment or something like that). I don't believe in deleting entries, though. I know that seems dumb to a lot of people, but I've regretted throwing away old writings, so I have decided to just leave the previous entries here. eventually they will become buried and forgotten, so really, it doesn't effect anything.

Finally, I am going to actually start following people, so that means that if you would like me to stalk your blogtastic mind babblings and beautiful poignant postings, please, follow me or just let me know where you are and don't mind me peering in.

A Post: An Update of Epic Porportions!

Epic only because I'm actually updating. A LOT has happened since I last updated. I no longer use this journal, mainly because my life decisions were deeply personal this past year and a half and I needed it to stay that way. Also, because most people have since forgotten them, I rediscovered my livejournal (wanabesweetie) and deadjournal (hickeyqueen) from high school. I hadn't written in them since probably 2007 and decided to give it a shot. The deadjournal is now friends only, but there is some personal goodies in there. The livejournal has become more of a creative outlet that happens to document what I am doing at the time. You are free to enjoy. (I personally think it is HILARIOUS to go back to when I was 16 and read my dumb pathetic prose of adolescent. AHHHHHH those were the days!)

I just wanted to point you in those directions if you are interested in looking. Perhaps I will start to update here as well. This can be more formal, I guess. I hope you all are finding personal wealth of happiness in whatever form it manifests best in your life.

I was watching the inauguration, and I must say that I like Obama, I'm excited for change, new perspective, and the movement toward a passionate, involved nation, but I was saddened to hear a laundry list of our nation's short comings with no actual plans. I guess today is not the day for that, but since the initial campaigning, I have become more and more frustrated with politics and their lack of disclosure when it comes to HOW they will fix us. More so now, since change is President Obama's foundation.

How is change going to happen? Please, President, don't let me down. I wait with bated breath, hoping to hear something soon now that his work week has officially begun, as to plans for change.

A Post: A Long Way to Thursday

Thanksgiving is Thursday, but I feel like I have so much that needs done, that I can't even think about it. I don't understand why some people don't check or reply to their emails when they are professors. Isn't that one of the most efficient ways to communicate in such a schedule clashing environment? I thought so at least. I have so many articles that are dependant on emails, and those aren't very reliable, but every time I go IN to the office (taking time off my other job) they are never there.

Enough! No more work talk. Thanksgiving is on its way and I was able to get most of my Christmas shopping done this past weekend. I really love Christmas shopping. I hate the crowds and pushy people (and when did parents stop holding their children's hands?) but I love picking things out for people and wrapping and the whole altruistic feel of Christmas. I would love a new holiday outfit, but buying a cute sweater for Scarlett fills me with more gratification that the perfect office holiday party dress. There is supposed to be cool weather and loads of food. Beth, Dave, and my niece Haylie, are coming down from WV to celebrate with us, and I am really excited about the blending of Jimmy and my Family's holidays. I only wish that these term papers and group presentation would finish themselves.

I hope you all have the most fantastic of holidays this Thursday. Even if you may not celebrate Thanksgiving per say, I recommend taking a moment out of this busy time of year and reflecting on the positive. In a time of hardship, it is most important to realize how lucky you are.

A Post: Strictly nonesense

I don't have time for a good post here, but I would like to leave some words of my wisdom.

One: only two men can get away with ponytails, Antonio Banderas and Johnny Depp.

Two: I worry about the youth sometimes. I know, I am but a youth myself (somewhat) but really, these young people that come in to see me, some of them just don't want to be here and I wonder why they even bother. And then I cry a little inside. Luckily, some are really awesome too, so I don't get too upset.

A Post: A Nonsense Post to be exact

Today is Friday. I love and loathe Fridays. I have a little more freedoms on Friday's because I don't have any classes and I don't have to go back to work at BAE. Unfortunately, today I have to do some running around for the magazine. I need to make some phone calls and I need to visit a professor. I worry about having to talk and interview people, and this scares me, because I know that mentoring is a big part of grad school and I know that what I want to do requires me to make contacts. I hope that maturity will bring more confidence in my ability to captivate people. That sounds weird... what I mean is that I tend to have some sort of strange physical change that happens every time I see someone where I don't look the same. I can't tell you how many people I have had to introduce myself to more than twice. I don't know if this is because I am soft spoken at times or if I am forgettable for some reason. That's not a good quality to have in someone that needs to have contacts for a career. *shrug* I have developed into a more assertive person over the past five years, and perhaps, that will continue without faultering my plans.

So, there is that. Otherwise, I am having to plan a wedding. This is slightly stressful. Plus, I don't know how money will be. I think we will be fine, but I am the type of person that needs a lot of emergency fund buffer. And I love shoes. There's my problem. I have the church, reception hall, cake plans, dress, shoes, rehearsal dress, and favors planned or purchased but I still have a lot to do. If anyone knows about good flower places, please let me know.

And still another note, I promise to get into the holiday spirit, as long as I can finalize some sort of research and an outline for BOTH of my term papers. Please, I don't care how bad the economy is, don't pressure me any earlier than normal to accept the end of the semester and beginning of the holiday season, marketers and radio stations!

A Post: A bunch of random opinions. you've been warned

First thing first, Prop 8. I had a very interesting conversation about this at a friend's house this past weekend. I find it deplorable that there are enough people in this country to determine the lawful rights of others based on religion. I do think, however, using their logic, that there is still no reason for everyone to enjoy the rights and other benefits that "married" couples do. Here I go: If, a homosexual couple can not get married strictly based on what the Bible says, then civil unions should become the lawful term for any "marriage." I maintain this because at my friend's place, she made the observation that she wouldn't want to be married in a country that defines it religiously because she, though heterosexual, is an atheist. Though, I don't even want to start in on how the religious zealots might feel about this issue and what they happily turn a bli9nd eye to, I would like to point out that if they feel that marriage is a religous act, then marriage should only be recognized by the church. Otherwise, it is unconstitutional. But really, my thoughts, homosexal or not, the rights of Americans are being supressed and as long as marriage in any combination of sexes is not mandatory, there is no reason to deny anyone.

I'm done.

In other news, Thanksgiving is only two weeks away as of tomorrow. I need to have my papers done. I haven't even started one. Damn it. I'm just super stoked to see family soon.

The holidays may suck a little being that it is the first year without family, but I'm looking to make the most of it. Anyone wanting to spread cheer after I finish my term papers are more than welcome!

A Post: A Toast

To America. Not for who you voted, this post was bound to happen whoever sat in their respect seats of power, but for how many of you voted. I waited til after work to vote, so it only took me 15 minutes from the time i parked to the time i was driving out of Tallwood Elementary. It kind of pains me, mostly because I don't think a lot of people who voted voted as informed voters, more like rebels without a cause, but I am encouraged to see something that ignited this nation. I have been feeling like there is no passion left in America. Myself included. I feel like the average American has turned into a me-first-make-my-money type of person who doesn't feel humanity and couldn't care less of what happens to their neighbors as long as it doesn't take their Hummer and big screen TV away.

America, please build off of this passion, please find causes and altruism to be proud of. Fight for those causes. Fight injustice and learn how to be active in life. Stop being controled by TV and politicians and organization leaders and tabloids and newspapers and journals.... just start finding what you believe in and please follow that as you would if your life depended on it. Because it does.

Hello all. I figured that with Halloween announcing the start of my first holiday season without most of the family, more specifically, without the nieces and nephew, it would be nice to start this public blog and keep in touch.

I'm not sure where all I will be going with this blog- random updates about my life, philosophical inquiries, or simply a "hi what's up" to everyone that may read this, but I would like to try to keep in touch with all of the family, friends, and colleagues that are spread across the world.

I am currently involved in a lot. It's been overwhelming and I feel like I have no social life. I seem to be using my weekends to catch up on sleep that I forgot to schedule into my weekday itinerary. I am still working at BAE Systems and also ODU as the writer for the Arts & Letters Alumni magazine and a freshman A&L adviser. I don't really feel like I'm the most qualified despite my degree in English. I guess I'm just overly aware that my writing is nothing special compared to so many people that I have read. I'm trying though, and I guess that's all I can do. It also doesn't help that I've had very little interest in reporting ever since I realized embellishment in articles is strictly prohibited. On top of that, I'm not writing editorial work, strictly reporting. In other words, I'm enjoying getting out and about, but I'm feeling constricted. It will look great on my CV, though, and I am meeting some great people.

Grad school is exhausting. I'm not even sure I'm qualified to talk about it right now. Plus, I'm scared of the grad school karma gods, and if I talk bad about them, they might smite me. So that ends that right now.

This is getting a bit long, so I will just leave with this- I will be trying my best to update this, I really admire those people that can update once a day, but I'm going to shoot for once a week, and I hope that I can start keeping in touch with you all a little better than I do now. Here's a picture of where my heart is this season, just because, well, they're friggin cute!
